At Vuuma, leadership is not defined by titles – it is defined by how we build people. Our newest director, Pieter, embodies this philosophy. With 35 years of experience across gold, zinc, diamonds, and more, Pieter has led at every level: from shift supervisor to Chief Operating Officer. And through it all, one theme has stayed constant – people first.
From the Floor to the Boardroom
Pieter began his career as an operator in the gold industry, “starting at the bottom” before moving into shift leadership. Leading teams older and more experienced than him taught Pieter an enduring lesson: people are the real drivers of performance. He recalls that as a young leader, learning how to motivate, listen, and earn trust shaped the way he would lead for decades to come.
This foundation carried through as his career expanded to global leadership roles. Pieter spent over a decade with Anglo American and De Beers, traveling to more than 60 mines across the world. His focus was always on improvement: identifying bottlenecks, unlocking value, and aligning teams to deliver results. Yet even at the corporate level, his passion for people development never wavered.
Building People, Not Just Processes
Throughout his career, Pieter has made it a point to develop the people around him. He explains: “When I step into a role, one of my first goals is to build capability so the team can eventually run without me. Everywhere I have worked, I have always trained people up to replace me.” For Pieter, this is not about moving on – it is about leaving a system stronger, with empowered individuals ready to step into leadership themselves.
That balance requires clarity, collaboration, and courage – qualities which he believes leaders must intentionally practice. Leaders, he says, must listen deeply, remain humble enough to understand the real issues, and have the courage to act, even when it is tough.
From ‘Say’ to ‘Do: Culture as Driver For Accountability & Lasting Performance
For Pieter, culture is not an abstract idea. It’s simple: culture is the way we do things. That means honouring commitments – “what we say is what we do” – and creating an environment where freedom to speak comes with accountability to act.
He believes great cultures allow individuals to bring their unique talents forward, while ensuring teams remain aligned to shared outcomes. “You cannot build a culture of just talking without results. It has to be freedom with accountability.”
The Vuuma Lens: The Vuuma Way
After decades across industries and continents, Pieter has now joined Vuuma to give back. “I love the Vuuma way of doing business,” he says. “It is about simplifying complexity – identifying constraints, aligning teams, and focusing energy where it matters most. That is how you move industries forward.”
This alignment with Vuuma Collaboration’s mission is what excites Pieter most. For him, leadership is about more than directing work, it is about creating the conditions where people and systems thrive together. By empowering individuals, creating cultures of accountability, and focusing on clarity and process; Pieter shows how performance and people growth go hand in hand.
This is the Vuuma way: clarifying complexity, aligning teams, and designing systems where people thrive and performance follows.
